Tips for nectar-loving birds:
Select a feeder that is easy to clean. It is important to replace nectar when it appears cloudy or milky, usually about every 2-3 days in hot weather. Wash with hot water and a brush, making sure to remove all evidence of black mold. Rinse well and refill with fresh nectar.
To make your own nectar solution, boil four (4) cups of water with one (1) cup of sugar for two minutes. Let cool before filling feeders. You can make extra nectar and store in a glass or metal container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
Ready-To-Use Nectar or nectar concentrates are also available in clear, orange or red.
Add an Ant Moat above feeders without the built-in ant moat feature. It will stop the ants from entering your nectar and spoiling the solution.
By placing feeders out of sunny locations, it will prevent early spoilage of your nectar solution.
When using the bottle-type nectar feeders be sure to fill the feeder entirely to create a vacuum and place in a shady location to prevent dripping.
Orioles, tanagers and catbirds love fruit! Try offering grapes, apples or oranges on a fruit feeder to see what new birds you can attract! Be sure to hang in a shady location and I should mention that the fruit will attract fruit flies -- which the hummingbirds adore.
